UNOP is affiliated with the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees,
American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO with over 1.2 million total members including 360,000 health care employees. NUHHCE and AFSCME are the sources for many services to the district, such as staff support, research assistance, cultural programs, educational workshops, publications, legislation, and other quality services. Members of UNOP, nurses, laboratory technologists, social workers, dental hygienists, nuclear medicine technologists, C T technologists, respiratory therapists and radiological technologists provide direct care, and keep medical and psychiatric facilities running in a safe and professional way. With over 1.3 million members nationwide, AFSCME and its affiliate unions (such as NUUHCE) are the most effective force for positive change in the wages, benefits and working conditions of health care workers. Our collective bargaining, legislative and public policy activities - such as working to improve staffing levels and other health and safety standards, advocating for worker-friendly legislation such as the Family and Medical Leave Act, and working for quality, affordable health care - are second to none. More and more, our nation's health care delivery system has suffered drastic changes under the banner of "Quality" improvement. But at NUHHCE/AFSCME, we know that many "quality" initiatives aren't really about improving patient care, but improving profits for executives of managed care companies. Much of the burden for these drastic changes in health care are being felt by nurses, doctors and other health care professionals. Patient care quality is being compromised and the health care profession itself is under attack. But UNOP NUHHCE/AFSCME isn't just standing by. On behalf of the 360,000 health care workers we represent nationally - more than 40,000 of whom are RNs, LPNs, LVNs and physicians - our union is fighting to ensure that health care professionals have a say in the future direction of our nation's health care delivery system. |
